National Poetry Writing Challenge Day 21 is to write a poem on a overheard speech. It could be something you overheard on the radio, something you overheard a coworker say. Use the overheard speech as a spring board to launch your poem. Your poem could comment directly on the overheard phrase or simply use it as an illustration or tone-setting material.

birdies ON WINDOW

I see two little birdies,

In a sand pit,

Under the trees,

Fight over a tit-bit,

The two little birdies,

Now fly high and high,

They follow the wind,

Up in the blue sky,

While I to the ground am pinned,

The two little birdies,

Perch on my window sill,

And I overhear them say,

“Look , she’s warm inside but she envies us still”,

“They forget to make the most of each day”,

“Human greed just has no end”,

“Keeping happiness at bay”,

“They forget they must transcend”,

“Little troubles and petty issues”,

Birdie number two on the sill, continues…

Two little birdies, then flew away,

A lesson or two, they taught me that day,

A lesson so simple, so profound,

“Happiness inside, not a thing not to be found”.

Every creature, big and small,

Challenges must face;

Just each in his own way,

Dare to rise after every fall, dare to rise after every fall,

And with passion run the race;

Till your last breath, every single day.
