We bring you a new interview today, with Rodney Gomez, whose book Citizens of the Mausoleum, is being put out by Sundress Publications. Gomez is the author of several chapbooks, and his poems have previously been published in journals including Poetry, The Gettysburg Review, Blackbird, Pleiades, Denver Quarterly, and Puerto del Sol, You can read some of Gomez’s poems here and here, and our interview with him here.
Today, we challenge you to write a poem that takes the form of a warning label . . . for yourself! (Mine definitely includes the statement: “Do Not Feed More Than Four Cookies Per Hour.”
Very often, most women (and it doesn’t matter if you have a job or not) are not financially savvy. They’d rather let the men (fathers or husbands) to take care of their finances, their investments and all the other boring money stuff than worry their heads over it. Occasionally, they may argue or fight to drive the point home that they’re in control. But more often than not, the season of bad temper is only a temporary phase, if all is well. Can’t blame the men for this one, can we? We, women (there are always exceptions) are quite happy not to have to think about where the money goes, as long as there’s enough to meet our needs and wants. We are clueless about the deposits, the insurance, the property papers etc. This poem is a warning to me. If you’re in the same boat, then do consider it as a wake-up call and act now!
Get your act together,
You should know better.
What’re you waiting for?
A change in the weather!
Snap out of your fantasy,
You should know better.
What do you want?
To pay the price of your fallacy!
Wake up from your slumber
You should know better.
What’re you thinking?
You don’t even know your account number!
Wake up girl!
Why wait till your world’s in a whirl?
Wake up before it’s too late!

Oh! There is another one that puts us on the same boat – the rocky and unintelligible world of finance. Yes, me too! The investments and their facts zoom over my head. Thank you for that reminder, this is one I always tell myself that I need to take note of. Glad you brought it up.

Ha ha…I wrote this poem, then got hubby to write everything down and send me an email. He did and asked me if I had read it. I said, “I’ve moved it to a personal folder. Will check when I need to 😉 Old habits die hard. But honestly, we need to do it. Will check with you when we meet if you’ve done it. 🙂

Well, I admit I have tried as I managed to bring it all into one folder for the ease of understanding but the dates, numbers and all the complicacy leave me baffled. Yes, you right. Old habits die hard. I wonder what is the need when you have entrusted that job (at least) to one reliable person, but….it is a must to know and to be aware. Yes, let us check with one another, will be reason enough to get doing.:)

Hey my friend 😊🙂 what a relevant issue. I’ve known many, many ladies who unfortunately are exactly like the one described in the poem. You’ve done a brilliant job with the post as usual my friend, so I’d only like to add that when the world turns upside for some unfortunate souls, it gets very difficult to keep oneself together as well as manage finances with negligible knowledge along with a billion other new and old things that keep cropping up and require attention.

So true Vags. I belong to the same group of ladies but intend fixing it. Yes, why wait for something to happen to wake up. You’re so, so right. If something unfortunate happens, there’s enough a person has to deal with, without this which could have been dealt with so much earlier.

An absolute must – control your finances and bank account.. I am personally strictly against joint accounts

Me too Dahlia. I’m totally against it. Just have no idea about the finer things such as investments. I’m totally impressed about your handling it. But now I’m determined to fix it, more than ever.

For investments ofcourse…wasn’t that what we were discussing. 😊 .Its when you age you realise, just keeping it in the account isn’t sufficient. I hope I’m making sense to you.

Then lets make a deal to fix it, by the 30th. End of NaPoWriMo and this dreadful warning. How about that?😊
