I Got an Award!

sunshine blogger award

A huge thanks to Robbie Cheadle for nominating me for the Sunshine Blogger Award. It’s a wonderful feeling to receive an award at the beginning of the year, when one is actually feeling very guilty about not being able to blog as religiously as one wants. Robbie, is the author of several books on poetry and prose. She is also a fabulous baker  among other things and shares her writing and recipes on her blog Robbie’s Inspiration

For accepting the Sunshine Blogger Award nomination, there are a few rules:

• Thank the blogger(s) who nominated you and link back to their blog.

• Answer 11 questions the blogger asked you.

• List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award in your blog post.

• Nominate 11 new bloggers & their blogs. Leave a comment on their blog to let them know they received the award and ask your nominees 11 new questions.

Below are the questions that Robbie’s asked me to answer. I’ll try to answer as best I can.

1. What is the most extreme “sport” you’ve done (if any)?

I have done sports but nothing extreme. The only ‘extreme,’ I’ve done is taking a class in boxing at the gym. It was my first class. But the trainer was a little too inspiring for the first class. Or maybe it was heroic me. I believed I was the next ‘Muhammad Ali,’ or ‘Mary Kom,’ in the making. I didn’t let age, or experience stop me from delivering the punches. Only I hadn’t worn the punching glove as yet. So at the end of the class, I came back with a hand that was swollen and black and blue from punching. That was my first and last ‘extreme,’ sport. And this incident is as fresh as it can get –  just 2 weeks old!

2. Do you have a favorite travel destination? If so, where?

I love travelling. Since I want to travel around the globe, I’ve never really visited a foreign destination more than once. However, if I had to go again, I’d love to travel to Italy once more. We’ve been to Venice, Florence, Sienna, Sorento, Cinque Terra and Vatican last time and we just about touched Rome. When we were there, I threw a  coin into the Trevis Fountain (though it was undergoing reconstruction and my coin hit the floor with a clang) because as per popular belief, if you throw a coin into the fountain you will go back to Rome. I’m waiting for that to happen 🙂

3. What is your favorite blog topic?

I don’t stick to a particular genre. I write what I feel. I know its not the right thing to do especially if one want to get loads of followers. And who doesn’t want followers?   However, writing for me, has always been about me, as selfish as it may sound. And so I amble along, following the whims of my heart. I write poems, travelogues, experiences and at times dabble with short stories (that’s something I need to work more on though). I have also started doing book reviews. My first one being in December 2019 on Robbie’s book – While the Bombs Fell

  1.  Do you have a preferred time of day to blog? When?

I like writing at night. In the silence of the night when the rest of the house is asleep, that’s when the words come. Sometimes, when the time permits, I blog in the middle of the day too.

5. Do you drink coffee while you blog?

No, i don’t. I just have water and munch on peanuts. Chewing on them keeps my mouth and mind active.

6. Do you have pets?

I don’t. I like the thought of having a dog but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to manage it. There are just so many other things that I want to do that I don’t think I’ll be able to give it the attention it requires. So, for now, the idea of having a dog is shelved until some time later in life.

7. If you were trying to fix a broken shovel handle and a 500 pound gorilla came up to you with a roll of tape, what would you do?

I’d take the tape if the gorilla seemed friendly. If it didn’t, I’d just run, leaving the shovel and all. Or maybe I’d freeze, dropping the shovel.

8. Do you prefer to swim in a pool or a natural body of water?

I’m not great at swimming. So, I just stick to the shallow end of the pool. A natural body of water is nice to look at. But not for swimming, not for me.

9. It’s Thanksgiving- turkey, some other type of meat, or no meat?

As Hindus, we do not have a Thanksgiving dinner. I love the thought behind a Thanksgiving dinner – all the family coming together and sharing a meal. If we were to ever have one, then I’d go with turkey, in line with the tradition. No point in not keeping with the tradition right, if we were celebrating?

10. Given the choice, would you prefer a spider or a snake in your home?

I’d prefer a spider to a snake. No second thoughts on that. We have spiders in our home here – the dainty ones- those that are barely visible – the ones that stay up on the ceilings and don’t bother coming down. Back in the countryside in my grandmother’s house, the spiders are big – thick black legs and bodies. I can’t stand them but I’m sure I prefer them to snakes.

11. What type of music do you listen to?

I nominate the following bloggers for this award:
Margie
Faithfully yours
Lynn Fay
Balroop
kurian
Kathryn Duff
Big Sky Buckeye
Mick Canning
V J Knutson
Andrea Stephenson
Mary O Connor
Susi
Most of the blogs I’ve chosen is of bloggers who I’ve recently met on WordPress. I’m glad we met. It would be fun to get to know you’ll a little better.  I understand if some of you (the veterans) do not wish to participate for want of time or because you do not believe in the awards. For those who do participate, the questions are the same as above. Sorry, I’m not being creative about them. You’re free to change any of the above questions if that’s what you’ll be asking your nominees. Congratulations to all of you!

I really enjoyed reading all your answers to the questions!
How very kind of you to nominate me!
    Thank you so much!
I hope you are not offended if I decline!
One answer to one of the questions I will give here to you.
Last question ~ I would much prefer a spider to a snake in my house , a snake , no way I would want one!
I am a rescuer of spiders and when I see one and others in my house are afraid of it, I very gently take it in a wet paper towel and put it out the door to freedom! 🙂

Thank you Margie! That’s such a sweet thing to say❤. I like reading your posts. They touch the heart instantly. I perfectly understand if you do not participate. I wanted people to know about your blog and that’s why I nominated you. And who cares about the other questions when you’ve answered one personally for me :). Who would know that you were a ‘spider rescuer!’ Have to have got to know you through blogging. Have a wonderful weekend!

Congratulations Smitha, awards are fun if they come without any rules.
Thanks for nominating my name, I’ve been nominated earlier also but I am a free bird, not tied by any caveats and work at will 🙂 I’ve had enough of them, a lesson taught to me by death, when I came face to face with the monster but who chose to spare me… Read more: “https://balroop2013.wordpress.com/2017/05/27/when-i-met-death/”

Still on the learning curve dear Smitha, I am delighted that my words convey some positive vibes. Thanks 🤗

Thanks for participating, Smitha. I really enjoyed your answers. Your experience with the punching reminds me of when I attempted to learn karate. I am a very determined person but I am quite small. So when I started karate lessons, the instructor paired me with a young man who was much bigger than me but of a relaxed and laid back temperament. The outcome was that I ended up dislocating his thumb with a well aimed chop. He screeched blue murder and I decided to give up karate, being far to dangerous a person to learn it. Have a wonderful weekend, Smitha.
