NaPoWriMo Day 18 2020 : Sweet pleasures

Our optional prompt for the day also honors the idea of Saturday (the Saturdays of the soul, perhaps?), by challenging you to write an ode to life’s small pleasures. Perhaps it’s the first sip of your morning coffee. Or finding some money in the pockets of an old jacket. Discovering a bird’s nest in a lilac bush or just looking up at the sky and watching the clouds go by.

I had written a poem in 2018 which was published in my book – Roads- A Journey with Verses under the title – ‘Treasure the little pleasures.

I’ve edited the poem here slightly. The last 21 days of lock-down have confirmed my belief that these indeed are the true pleasures in life that must be treasured – they definitely are for me.

Sweet pleasures

A walk at dawn, a nip in the air
A “Hello,” here, a “Good Morning” there
Fluttering petals, soaring birds
Nodding fox-tails, kind words

Crackling of dry leaves under my feet
Fairy lights, starry skies, dancing on the street
A bar of chocolate, bedtime stories
Romantic movies, childhood memories

A message from a friend that kindles the heart
A mug of coffee, baked bread and tart
The soft glow of candles in the dark
Dew-kissed grass and the singing lark

A home filled with laughter, safe and secure
A hug that says, 'You'll get through this, I'm sure."
Tucked in a blanket; snug and warm
Knowing you'll not be alone in a storm

The sprouting of a seed
Soft music and a book to read
The sweet silence of the night-
The creamy white moon and stars shining bright

These are the things that truly matter
All the rest, incidental clutter
